Telia, Skyfora and Nokia turn Finland's 5G network into a sensor for GNSS jamming and extreme weather

The capability is already activated at around one hundred 5G sites in Finland. The partners plan to expand it towards a significant share of sites across the country in the coming months.

The solution turns existing 5G sites into a distributed sensing network. It can detect disruptions in GNSS signals, such as jamming and spoofing, and create a near-real-time view of where interference is occurring. At the same time, it produces dense atmospheric humidity data that can support improved short-term weather forecasting.

GNSS signals are widely used for positioning, navigation and timing in aviation, maritime operations, telecom networks, energy systems, logistics, drones and defence applications. As GNSS interference has become an increasingly topical security issue in Europe, national-level detection capabilities are becoming an important part of resilience and preparedness.

"5G is no longer critical infrastructure for connectivity only. It can also become a national sensor network," says Jari Collin, Head of Customer Segment Defence at Telia Finland. "Together with Skyfora and Nokia, we have demonstrated how existing mobile network infrastructure can support authorities with a new layer of situational awareness."

For authorities, the jamming detection service provides information on where electronic interference may be occurring. This can support preparedness and operational decision-making in rapidly changing situations.

The weather capability is based on measuring atmospheric humidity from GNSS signal data. Humidity is a key factor in rapidly developing weather events, including storms, extreme rainfall, flood risks and heat stress. Denser and more frequent observations can improve situational awareness for both civilian and military applications.

The solution has been developed in Finland by Telia, Skyfora and Nokia. Telia provides the 5G network and GNSS receivers environment and mission-critical connectivity expertise, Skyfora provides the software-only based GNSS-based sensing and atmospheric intelligence technology, and Nokia contributes the mobile network technology enabling the capability to scale globally.
